How to Remove Silences From a Podcast or Video in One Click

How-to5 min read

Pauses that feel natural in a conversation feel slow in a short clip. Removing silences tightens a clip by 10–30% without changing what anyone says.

How automatic silence removal works

The editor measures the loudness of the audio over time. Stretches below a threshold for longer than a minimum length are marked as silence and cut out, and the remaining parts are joined. Good tools leave a few frames of padding so words don't get clipped.

Doing it in Pixtale Edits

  1. Create a clip from your video.
  2. Click Silences in the timeline toolbar.
  3. Review the result: the cuts appear as separate parts on the timeline.
  4. Undo with Ctrl+Z if a cut feels too tight, or drag a part's edge to restore a pause.

When to keep a pause

Tip: remove silences first, then add transitions. Cuts on a jump between parts look cleaner with a short dissolve or zoom.

Choosing the right settings

Two settings matter: how quiet counts as silence (the threshold) and how long a silence must last before it's cut (the minimum length). A threshold that's too high cuts quiet words; too low and breaths stay in. A minimum length of about 0.3–0.5 seconds keeps natural rhythm while removing dead air. Always leave a little padding around each cut so the first and last sounds of words survive.

Silences vs. filler words

Silence removal cuts pauses, not "um", "uh" or "you know". Filler words have sound, so the detector keeps them. Remove the worst fillers by hand: split the clip just before and after the filler and delete that part with ripple delete, which closes the gap. For short clips, removing two or three fillers is usually enough.

When automatic removal goes wrong

A clean editing order

  1. Pick the moment and set IN and OUT.
  2. Remove low hum and enhance the voice.
  3. Remove silences.
  4. Cut filler words by hand.
  5. Reframe, then add captions, music and transitions.

Doing it in this order means captions and music are placed on the final timing, so you don't have to fix them after every cut.

FAQ

Will removing silence make the video look jumpy?

Jump cuts are normal in short video. Add a light zoom or dissolve on cuts if you want a smoother feel.

Does it work for podcasts with background music?

It works best on clean voice audio. Strong music can hide pauses from the detector.

Can I undo it?

Yes, with one undo, or by dragging part edges back.
